Hasta la fecha, son pocos los estudios históricos que han abordado la estructura y la evolución de los espacios urbanos en Michoacán. Los antecedentes más lejanos se remontan al último tercio del siglo XIX, cuando aparecieron los primeros trabajos sobre la ciudad de Morelia.
