L’article, centré sur la guerre du Pacifique au moment où celle-ci s’est déroulée à
Tacna et à Arica, vise à expliquer comment se sont construites des représentations
imagées du Pérou, de la Bolivie et du Chili dans la presse américaine. Une analyse
de contenu basée sur des journaux d’époque permet de conclure que l’image du
Pérou a été ternie par la contestable “ moralité ” de ses dirigeants politico-militaires
; celle de la Bolivie fut présentée comme un pays pauvre et désorganisé ; et celle
du Chili dépeinte comme un État ambivalent, à la fois organisé et “ barbare ”.
