Junto a los estudios históricos de carácter político que se han realizado sobre el sigo XIX mexicano, han aparecido también novedosas producciones referentes a asuntos económicos. Entre los temas que se han abordado sobresalen los relativos a las comunicaciones como un problema que enfrentó el país para emprender su desarrollo económico. Varios trabajos hacen notar que la falta de medios de comunicación y transporte, en distintas regiones del país, frenó el intercambio productivo y obstaculizó el comercio con el exterior. Por ello, creemos oportuno ocupamos en este trabajo de los proyectos y obras del Camino Real México-Acapulco que, siendo uno de los circuitos comerciales más importantes desde la época colonial,’ dejó de serlo después de consumada la Independencia de México.
