Cet article se propose d’étudier le processus de déforestation à partir de l’arrivée du chemin de fer au Michoacán durant le porfiriat. Il analyse également la commercialisation des produits forestiers qui approvisionnèrent les compagnies de chemin de fer qui avaient besoin de grandes quantités de bois pour la mise en place des rails. Le chemin de fer favorisa l’intégration de diverses régions commerciales. Cependant, l’avancée de la modernité se fit au dépend d’une partie importante des forêts du Michoacán comme le démontre le nombre significatif d’hectares rasés dans la zone de développement.
