A lo largo del siglo XIX y en las primeras décadas del XX, ciertas élites intelectuales y políticas renegaron de la herencia hispánica. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, demostraron una irreprimible aversión por las poblaciones indígenas y negras de sus respectivas naciones. Una parte muy significativa de dichas élites divulgó el relato de la leyenda negra antiespañola y, simultáneamente, exhibió un indisimulado rechazo hacia las poblaciones amerindias y afrodescendientes. Un rechazo que, en ciertos casos, se aproximaba mucho al racismo. También fue habitual, en esos contextos, el desprecio del mestizo. En este artículo, analizaremos algunas obras de destacadas figuras intelectuales de México, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Cuba y Colombia.
