Luis de Onís fue un diplomático “preliberal”, que desarrolló actividades
diplomáticas durante cuarenta años tanto en Europa como América entre el
Antiguo Régimen y el Trienio liberal, conocido sobre todo por el Tratado de
1819 con Estados Unidos. Es un ejemplo de adaptación de las elites en la transición
a la edad contemporánea. A partir fuentes depositadas en el Archivo Histórico
Nacional y el Archivo General de Indias, analizo su visión de Iberoamérica y los
medios propuestos para contener su emancipación, destacando sus propuestas
de carácter más radical y realista respecto a la generalidad de la clase política
española.
