Se describen en este artículo algunos aspectos de las relaciones entre feligreses, párrocos y funcionarios civiles en las parroquias del arzobispado del estado de México bajo el régimen de Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada. En un marco de ásperas relaciones Iglesia-Estado a escala pueblerina, resulta notable la formación de alianzas o redes informales pero muy eficaces, hasta el punto de minimizar o cancelar la aplicación de las Leyes de Reforma.
