Todos los historiadores consideran que la suspensión del culto público por parte de la Iglesia católica fue un factor decisivo en el levantamiento cristero. ¿Cómo tomó el episcopado mexicano, cómo aprobó la Santa Sede decisión tan grave? La apertura de los archivos permite ahora aclarar un episodio bastante confuso y algo misterioso. Estaba lejos de existir unanimidad entre los obispos y en el seno de la Curia romana, pero una minoría radical logró convencer al Papa de que existía, de modo que él aprobó la suspensión, contra el parecer de su Secretaría de Estado. Unos jesuitas mexicanos tuvieron un papel decisivo, moviéndose en México y en Roma.
