Un viejo sueño, el de una ruta que uniera el golfo de México y el océano Pacífico por el istmo de Tehuantepec, fue un hecho entre 1858 y 1860, cuando empresarios estadounidenses organizaron un negocio que incluía barcos de vapor, carruajes y carretas, mulas y caballos, transporte de ida y vuelta para viajeros, carga y correo. El sueño duró poco, pero el camino atrajo a hombres de negocios, especuladores, profesionistas, técnicos y emigrantes deseosos de llegar a California y beneficiarse de los hallazgos de oro. El trabajo versa sobre el itinerario y sus etapas, acercándose a los viajeros a través de los pocos testimonios existentes, muchos procedentes de la prensa de ambos países, pues historiográficamente el tema no ha sido abordado.
