La minería en Guerrero, que en otras épocas había adquirido notables rendimientos, se encontraba en plena decadencia cuando dio inicio el gobierno porfiriano. Durante este período, las diferentes administraciones gubernamentales dieron un impulso especial a este ramo productivo. Los resultados, sin embargo, fueron en modesta proporción en comparación a otras entidades del país.
