A principios de enero de 1939, la prensa mexicana anunció la decisión del gobierno de Lázaro Cárdenas de conceder asilo a los ex combatientes internacionales que participaron en la Guerra Civil española contra el totalitarismo y en defensa de la legalidad republicana y la libertad. Días después, de igual manera se dio a conocer la cancelación definitiva de la recepción de los voluntarios de la libertad --como también son conocidos-en nuestro país.
