Este artículo analiza la política imperial de España en el siglo XVIII y al Caribe como espacio geoestratégico. En ese sentido, se revisan diversos materiales bibliográficos y cartográficos, a fin de mostrar cómo se percibían las islas y litorales de tierra firme "que ciñen las dos Américas", entre los siglos XV y XVIII. Asimismo, se examina el documento intitulado Instrucción Reservada, mismo que fue redactado por el ministro de Estado de Carlos III, el conde de Floridablanca, en 1787. El texto contiene un programa de gobierno que incluye aspectos militares, eclesiásticos, civiles, de justicia, finanzas, comercio e industria, y sirvió a la autora para hacer una caracterización del Circuncaribe, entendido éste como área de defensa militar y de frontera entre potencias rivales. Además, los territorios comprendidos en esta demarcación, importantes por su posición estratégica, eran objeto de negociación y llegaban a canjearse con países como Inglaterra o Francia.
