En esta obra, el autor hace un llamado a “recuperar el carácter
crítico” de la disciplina histórica (p. 189), afirmación con la cual,
seguramente, coincidimos muchos de los practicantes de este oficio.
Lo que posiblemente resulte menos consensual sea la manera de
brindarle ese filo crítico. Después de todo, desde sus inicios, la
historiografía moderna ha mantenido una estrecha relación con el
poder. Tradicionalmente ha actuado como uno de los cancerberos de
las identidades, las utopías y los relatos fundacionales de las clases
dominantes, los grupos de poder y de ese gran tótem que es el Estado
nacional, deidad de esas “tribus” que son las naciones modernas.
